Night Under Lights

In the days leading up to August 13th and 14th, Carolina Dragway seemed to have a buzz about it that just couldn't be stopped. When the gates opened for Thursday night test and tune the fans quickly realized the days to follow where going to be historical. With 5 cars already on the grounds making test hits, some as far away as the Dominican Republic, the fans got a feel of what to expect.

Friday afternoon the gates opened to find the baddest converter driven Pro Mods in the country just waiting to get a shot at the House of Hook. Testing began at 6pm with only a few cars making hits. Everyone seemed to be waiting on the other to make a hit on the track first to see how good the traction really was in such high track temps. Robbie Matthews and Danny Blankenship decided they would set the tone for the evening. After a nice lap from both cars, along came the Bladerunner. Owned by Terry and Terri Green, Troy Jordan laid down two patches of nice hot rubber and set the Alan Pittman built Camaro in the lights. When the amber lights flashed it only took a few seconds to realize this was going to be a fast race. 3.92 seconds to be exact at 184 mph, the Bladerunner team had just reset the World Record for a powerglide equipped race car. With an astounding .930 sixty foot time Transmisson builder Victor Reitzel proved he has found some secrets to make the glides hold up. However this was qualifying, could Jordan back up the record when it counted?

9pm rolled around and the staging lanes were 17 cars deep from all parts of the globe ready for qualifying. Robert Mathis and Kenny Kneece set the tone as Mathis recorded a 4.03 second lap to kick things off officially. Tommy Mauney rolled to the line next and laid down a pass of 3.974 186mph to take the top spot for now. The Hog Farmer Dewayne Silance was next up and had never visited the 3 second zone, after being so close many times. Not to be outdone The Hog Farmer cranked out a career best 3.976 181mph pass. After the crew finished their starting line celebration, New Yorker Chris Rini in the ATI Transmisson sponsored Dodge Stratus delivered a 4.01 183 mph pass and things were getting tight at the top of the qualifying sheet. The next thing you hear is the whine from a strong running supercharger. Troy Jordan rolled in the water and everyone in the house was on their feet just waiting to see if the last run was a fluke. The fans didn't have long to wait as Jordan delivered the goods in fine fashion with a 3.938 184mph run to back up his previous 3.92 to prove he is worthy of the Worlds Fastest Powerglide Pro Mod. Every fan in the grand stands roared their approval. Danny Blankenship and Mike Hill rounded out qualifying with a couple of nice low 4.0 passes.

Round two brought the field tighter together, however, round three just made it even better. Danny Blankenship joined the 3 second runners with a 3.99 184 mph run. With no runs yet under his belt due to different problems all day, Ric Fleck brought his ProCharged Corvette to the line in a last ditch effort to make the fast field. When the chutes deployed at the finish line, Flex Racing had just reset the ProCharger World Record with a move from the outhouse to the penthouse in just 4.036 seconds at 181mph.  Could things get any better in eliminations? We soon would find out.

First round brought only 15 cars due to parts breakage in round 3 of qualifying. Ric Fleck and Steve Kirk would do battle first and what a opening run it was, Fleck had the advantage at the start .033 to .041 and when the scoreboards lit up both cars ran identical 4.051 second runs with Fleck taking the win by a margin of .008. Robert Mathis was next to get the win light against Craig Miller who experienced some electrical problems, 4.09 to 4.30. Dewayne Silance got a single run when Carol Long was unable to get her blown Corvette started. Silance took full advantage of his single with another career best run of 3.971 seconds at 183mph. Famed Chassis builder Tommy Mauney brought the ex Burton Auxier Camaro to the line next to take on the Turbo Charged entry of Coby Rabon. Mauney took the advantage at the start and never looked back taking the win a 4.000 to a losing 4.172. Danny Blankenship brought the drama to the line with him in the opening round when he got distracted on the starting line and was dead late giving Dave Hance a starting line advantage of .048 to a .333, however the blown horsepower pulled through for Blankenship as he took the win 4.073 to a 4.425. Chris Rini and Clarence cloud would do battle next. When both cars came through the water, the blown Willy's of Cloud done a very short burnout and took a left out of nowhere. Narrowly missing the wall, everyone realized the steering wheel had came off so Cloud calmly put it back on, backed up and told Rini to bring it on. Bring it he did as Rini, took the win going away with a 4.02 to a losing 4.41. Kenny Kneece and Mike Hill left the line together but Kneece would take the win over a tire shaking Hill 4.19 to 4.27. Troy Jordan took his single run and put down yet another quick pass for the round with a 3.970 seconds lap.

Under the lights with a little cooler air, round 2 came smoking out of the water box as Blankenship and Kneece would do battle and this one turned out to be a heartbreaker for Kneece. Kneece took a shot at the Christmas tree only to turn on the red bulb and to top it off Blankenship was out of shape by 300 feet. Blankenship took the win 4.80 to a losing 4.20. The two racers who reset the World records in their respective combinations would do battle next but wait, Ric Fleck is nowhere to be found as he broke a gear in the blower the previous round, this gave Jordan a free ride to the semi's. Being the smart racer that he is, Jordan and Crew decided to take the tree and idle down the track to save parts. A little payback was in order next as Silance and Rini would do battle. Rini strapped a holeshot win on Silance at the 90k to win race back in May at this same track so Silance was focused on the job at hand this time. Rini once again had the better reaction but only by a slight margin .030 to .033, with both cars having Buck Racing engines, Charlie Buck was on the starting line smiling as he watched both cars make the 1/8 mile trek with the flames hung out of both sides. Silance pulled ahead to take the win with another 3.975 to a losing 4.02. A pair of Fulton race engines came out as the final pair in round 2 to see who would earn a berth in the semi final round. Mauney in the Camaro would be second off the line as Robert Mathis took the advantage .023 to .063; Fulton power was evident on both sides as Mauney took the win 3.990 to 4.045. These drivers are putting it all on the line to win this race; you could feel the tension in the air as we headed to the semi final round.

It would be Fulton Power vs. Buck Power as the other side of the ladder brought Blower vs. Blower. Jordan and Blankenship were first up and it was a dog fight as Blankenship strapped a holeshot on Jordan that nobody thought he would be able to make up. Darryl Makins and Terry Green put a tune up in that would save Jordan on this day as the Bladerunner earned its berth in the final round with a 3.962 to a losing 4.048. Nitrous is king in the south as almost every car at the track has some amount on it; everyone in the house was watching and waiting to have a side by side 3 second pass from Mauney and Silance. Silance rolled up and pre staged with Mauney doing the same. Silance lit his second bulb and here comes Mauney but he doesn't stop, Mauney had a transbrake fail at the worst possible time. Mauney got the red light and Silance took the Buck Horsepower into the finals with yet another 3.975 183 mph pass. If you count the shake down runs of Silance, the beautiful red Camaro has been 4.02, 4.02, 4.01, 3.97, 3.97, 3.97, 3.97, 3.97 and the finals has yet to be run, could he save the best for last?

10:45pm brought the two baddest converter driven Pro Mods to the line to settle the score, Jordan would take the right lane as he has all day and Silance would move to the left. Both done long smoky burnouts and brought them back to the line to race for the $7,000 top prize. Jordan's best reaction time of the day came all the way back in the first round when he was .043, Silance on the other hand has been living in the .030 range so Jordan had to be on his game or the Hog Farmer would steal the win on a holeshot. It was David vs. Goliath as the two cars rolled into the stage beams. Not to be denied on this day, Jordan strapped a .009 reaction off the starting line. It only took a second as Silance would shake the tires for the first time all weekend. Jordan thundered all the way to the Winner's Circle with a 3.962 184 mph pass to start the celebration.

"Troy Jordan piloted one of the best tuned racecars I have seen in sometime, the car never faltered all weekend, it was fast, consistent and Troy got up on the wheel when he needed to. Just an awesome performance from an awesome team" stated Jeff miles after the race. "Alan Pittman built us one heck of a car, it just ran flawless all weekend, I never would have believed a powerglide could stand those sixty foot times. Victor Reitzel said, “lay it to it, I bet it will take it”. I guess I lost that bet" an elated Terry Green said from the winners circle.

“We are just very excited to be back at home, said Troy. Carolina Dragway is home to me and it’s where I learned how to drive fast cars! We had the perfect car from Alan Pittman and the perfect tune up from Darryl Makins, who has been with us from day one. We brought that combination to The House of Hook, where Jason “The Track Master” Hall provided the perfect racing surface. I can’t say enough about Jason. He is unreal, the best in the business and he knows that track! Friday night was perfect conditions to break a record and Darryl got the job done with his tune up. This was definitely an awesome race and we are very happy to be a part of it. The competition was very strong today. I am very excited about 2011. I think this new series will be the best thing going. “

Next on the calender is November 5th and 6th, Carolina Dragway will host a Pro Mod showdown similar to the 90k to win race held in May. However this time the Nitrous cars will have their own class with any Transmission and Clutch legal as well as Blower and Turbo cars will have their own class with the same rules. Cool air and big money should bring unbelievable times to The House of Hook, Stay Tuned........
